Even a 30-minute role can really leave a lasting impact: Archana Kottige
For Archana, the industry’s fixation on body image is "tiring". “Ninety per cent of the audience thinks a heroine has to look a certain way. But I feel you’re an actor first. Of course, you need to be presentable, but performance is what leaves an impression. When I watch someone act, I don’t notice their weight. I look at their eyes, expressions, and muscles at work. That’s what matters. Male actors are rarely judged for their looks, so why should women be?” she questions.
It feels good to be recognised for my work. Earlier, I was the one clicking pictures of my friends with fans — now people come and ask if they can click pictures with me
'MY DREAM IS TO GET INTO COMEDY'
Archana reveals to us that her true ambition is comedy. “I’ve always admired Urvashi, Umashree, and Shruti ma’am. Their roles in films like Rama Shama Bhama — no skin show, just pure comic genius — are unforgettable. I’ve watched that film over a hundred times. Comedy is tough, but I love it, and one day, I want roles that let me explore that side,” she says.
'AYYANA MANE BECAME A TURNING POINT FOR ME AS AN ACTOR’
Looking back, Archana calls her work in the Kannada TV series Ayyana Mane a turning point. “People started recognising me in parks, in autos, even calling me a ‘serial actress’. I’d laugh and correct them that it was a series. But those little things made me feel noticed,” she says. With OTT and short-form platforms, she adds, recognition has multiplied. “I once believed you needed to slog for 40–50 days on a film to leave a mark. But roles I shot in just two days — like Ekka — brought me more appreciation. That’s when it hit me — performance is what counts.”
Archana and cricketer Sharath BR tied the knot earlier this year. Ask her about her career and the kind of offers that came her way after marriage, and she says, “Before I tied the knot, I’d get at least two calls a week. After marriage, nothing. It shocked me,” she admits. “But in hindsight, everything happens for a reason. I’ve started choosing more substantial, performance-oriented roles."
My husband, Sharath BR, is my biggest cheerleader. He pushes me to go out there and do my best, and that support really leaves an indelible mark on me
