Established fanbases, ‘guaranteed’ returns driving sequel trend in Kannada cinema?

From Sidlingu 2 and Sanju Weds Geetha 2 earlier this year to the much-awaited Kantara: Chapter 1 releasing later this year, sequels and prequels offering audiences a return to familiar characters and worlds are becoming a common occurrence in Kannada cinema. From Hollywood’s superhero sagas to Bollywood’s expanding cinematic universes and even past Kannada productions, the concept of revisiting films is not new in the world of cinema. But what is fuelling this trend?
‘VIEWERS ARE DRAWN TO FAMILIAR STORIES’
“Audiences love reconnecting with familiar stories and beloved characters, which fosters a sense of nostalgia and excitement. This familiarity drives footfall and enhances the overall movie-watching experience, making sequels a vital contributor to the overall box office for the industry,” says Kamal Gianchandani, Chief Business Planning & Strategy of a leading cinema chain.


SEQUELS PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVISIT BELOVED CHARACTERS, EXPAND UNIVERSES
Sequels and prequels offer filmmakers an opportunity to expand on existing narratives by exploring backstories and lore, deepening audience engagement with franchise universes. For instance, the highly anticipated upcoming Kantara - Chapter 1, is reportedly set to “uncover the layered history” behind the iconic deities central to the original Kantara. Likewise, K.G.F.: Chapter 3 will reportedly explore Rocky’s global criminal expansion, political conflicts, and internal struggles.

SEQUELS CARRY HIGHER EXPECTATIONS A film with a huge fan following faces even greater expectations with its next installment. Rishab Shetty, in a previous interview with us, noted that for the Kantara team, this meant leveraging enhanced technology and deeper world-building to offer a superior cinematic experience for the upcoming prequel. “As the film gets bigger, your responsibility increases too. Considering the kind of expectations audiences have from Kantara Chapter 1, we decided to ensure that they must have a fully loaded visual treat,” he said.

‘THE RIGHT PROMOTION MATTERS’
Despite the heightened excitement surrounding sequels, expectations can often fall short. For instance, Vijayaprasad, director of Sidlingu 2, noted that the right kind of promotions are crucial in generating excitement that translates to ticket sales for a sequel. “We faced limitations that prevented us from promoting the film as effectively as we had hoped,” he noted in an interview with us, discussing why the sequel didn’t perform as well as expected at the box office.
