The most accomplished and popular of "duos" in Kannada Cinema, Dorai-Bhagavan have numerous hits to their name
Filmmakers Dorairaj and S.K. Bhagavan have been instrumental creative forces in the shaping of Kannada Cinema. Having begun their journey together as a duo in the early 1960s, Dorai-Bhagavan went on to make over 50 films along the way with a strong penchant for "commercial" or mainstream cinema. Their collaborations with Dr. Rajkumar, especially, stand out in this regard for the sheer volume of work and also the range of genres their films showcase. Be it the 'C.I.D. 999' series or the films featuring Anant Nag and Lakshmi in the latter of their careers, Dorai-Bhagavan's filmography brims with timeless classics and cult favorites.

Jedara Bale (1968)
The first of the 'C.I.D 999' series, 'Jedara Bale' inspired the desi-Bond genre in the country and also brought a characteristic shift in Kannada Cinema. For starters, the industry began to dabble with a fresh genre and explore it in a full-fledged manner- Dr. Rajkumar, who mostly featured in family dramas until then, was able to display a unique, suave side to him to great success. Jedara Bale is regarded as India's very first franchise to have four seperate installments and the 'C.I.D 999' character ended up becoming a cult hit in the coming years.

Kasturi Nivasa (1971)
A story goes that 'Kasturi Nivasa' was originally offered to Tamil legend Sivaji Ganesan who was forced to turn down the offer because of the film's depressing ending ("Too sentimental," he said, apparently). The film would later be made in Kannada in 1972 with Dr. Rajkumar in the lead, and owing to his stellar central performance, it grew to become a game-changer, of sorts, whose influence became apparent in other regions too. Reportedly, Sivaji Ganesan gave Dr. Raj a tight hug after watching the film for the first time and declared himself a fool for not taking up the golden chance when it came begging (he did eventually star in the 1974 Tamil remake). As far as the directors Dorai-Bhagavan are concerned, the duo decided on making the film to prove a point that it was more than capable of handling an emotional subject such as this and that they weren't here to only make spy thrillers. 'Kasturi Nivasa' is one of the biggest hits of the '70s, a decade known exclusively for blockbusters.

Eradu Kanasu (1974)
If 'Kasturi Nivasa' stood out as a beautiful melodrama about a most virtuous man, 'Eradu Kanasu' ranks quite high in Dorai-Bhagavan's filmography as a top-notch romance drama. Dr. Raj, Manjula, and Kalpana, the film's leads, would get new opportunities to showcase their respective ranges as actors, and thanks to Rajan-Nagendra's superb soundtrack which went on to pick up its own separate share of fanfare, the film still remains a cult-classic and one of the best to ever come out of the industry.

Benkiya Bale (1983)
Just as with Dr. Rajkumar, Dorai-Bhagavan were instrumental in reshaping Anant Nag's career in Kannada Cinema. Nag was primarily known as the "art film" type following his stint in Hindi cinema but the duo spotted an untapped star in him and went on to direct a number of successful films featuring him and actor Lakshmi in the lead. The journey began in 1976 with 'Bayalu Daari' (starring Kalpana) and the collaboration would forge on to create films like 'Chandanada Gombe' and 'Benkiya Bale'. The latter was based on Ta Ra Su's book of the same name and was a huge musical blockbuster at the time of its release (featuring Rajan-Nagendra, another super popular duo of Kannada Cinema).

Jeevana Chaitra (1992)
'Jeevana Chaitra' stands out as a special film for more than one reason. It was the last film that B. Dorairaj and S.K. Bhagavan would direct as a duo (Dorairaj sadly passed away a few months later) and also marked Dr. Raj's return to acting after a three-year hiatus. 'Jeevana Chaitra' also fetched the superstar a National Award for playback singing (the only bonafide actor in India to have achieved the feat), and as a result of its many other exploits, gave a fitting climax to an era that defines Kannada Cinema in many regards.
