#BTS: The men behind world of Jamaligudda
Post trailer launch, the film 'Once Upon A Time In Jamaligudda' has struck a chord with the audience for its slow music, cinematography, and strong presence of terrific actors. We caught up with the technicians who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to create magic on screen.
Color palettes were kept to a minimum: Karthik
DOP Karthik, who is making his debut with Jamaligudda, says he had planned the colour palette with the director almost a year ago. "We zeroed in on 5 colours in the shades of reds, greens, yellows, blacks, and blues. We even went for anamorphic lenses. During the shoot, we decided against using artificial smoke and instead relied on the mist. We didn’t even enhance the greens when we shot in Malnad. Even in grading, we made sure to retain natural colours. The film looks rich and colourful. I don’t know how people will take it. Due to weather changes, we have been shooting climax for 8 days. However, the director and Dhananjay were extremely supportive.
Ambisonics, a USP: Abhinandan Kashyap
Sound engineer Abhinandan Kashyap says, sounds have played out like another character in the film. "We have used reality microphones while shooting. We have used Ambisonics throughout the film and have retained the natural sounds. Such an attempt is a first in Kannada. It is very realistic. We have not done much processing. The sounds have ups and downs as well, depending on the mood of the film."
Realised why editors are called second directors: Harish Komme
Award-winning editor Harish Komme recalls ace actor Kamal Hasan’s line that editors are the second directors and says he realised what exactly the actor meant when working on this film. "I have collaborated with Dhananjay for the third time. I did Monsoon Raga, then Head Bush, and now Jamaligudda. I feel good and special about this feat. We had to take calls on the length of the film because it is a feel-good film. We wanted to do something different. We made a couple of last-minute changes. shot a few scenes even after the wrap. The first cut was around 3 hours long, and we trimmed it by an hour. The film looks tight and conveys what it wants to," he says.
Rangada Ragale was challenging: Anoop Seelin
Ace composer Anoop Seelin has done the background score and composed music for a song. "Jamaligudda has a travel and love story theme. After the theme of Aditi and Dhananjay was released, the team wanted it to be a song. So, Pramod Marvante just gave me two words—Rangada Ragale—and we composed a song in one and a half days! This is a unique genre film. The film has tiny bits in the climax, and it has come out very well," he shares.
