It isn’t often that one gets to see mainstream Bollywood films with characters from North India and South India as the lead pair. Lately, there have been commercial films in which a Tamilian protagonist has romanced a North Indian. Here’s a look at some of them. 2 States Based on Chetan Bhagat’s book of the same name, this yet-to-be-released film has Arjun Kapoor playing Krish Malhotra, while Alia Bhatt plays Ananya Swaminathan. Main Tera HeroVarun Dhawan plays Bangalore boy Sreenath Prasad and romances Ileana D’Cruz and Nargis Fakhri. While there are no North-South caricatures, the film is set in a South Indian city. Chennai Express This film saw Shah Rukh Khan reprising his character Rahul with a comic twist, as he stumbled upon romance with Tamilian Meenalochni Azhagusundaram, played by Deepika Padukone. Raanjhanaa While the film is set in Benares, it had Dhanush playing Kundan, whose Tamil Brahmin family is settled in the city. Sonam Kapoor plays a girl from a conservative Muslim family in UP. Gori Tere Pyaar Mein The film, set in Bangalore and Gujarat, follows the love story between TamBram Sriram (Imran Khan) and Punjabi girl Dia Sharma (Kareena Kapoor Khan).
