Kannada Film Posters that capture true of essence of the stories they belong to

Posters are a key gateway to a film. They withhold so many subtleties and manage to bring in a unique form of engagement with the audiences. From character sketches to color palettes, story worlds to emotional energies, a poster has the power to carry each of the elements, and more, in the most artistic of ways. In recent times, the Kannada Film Industry has renewed itself artistically and employed a young, vibrant sensibility that seemed missing for many years prior to that. In this very pursuit, there have been some memorable films made and with each of these films came an equally interesting poster work. So, bearing many different qualities in mind, let's take a look at some of the best Kannada Film Posters of the previous decade.

Super (2010)

The term "maverick" is often associated with actor Upendra and never in vain. While his films tend to be polarizing for the sheer absurdity, his work as a director has pleased many as they offer a weird mix of nativity, wishful thinking, and bluntness. His 2012 film 'Super' originally bore no title, except for a simple hand gesture on the poster that eventually did all the talking among the fans. The poster, especially, is a benchmark design in terms of both publicity and aesthetics, and thanks to the rather uncanny idea behind it which makes it permanent memory for many.

Lucia (2013)

'Lucia' is a film about bottled-up anxiety, chaos, and vivid dreams. While the underlying theme of the film concerns lucidity, the very interesting poster manages to capture all of the above and still not give away much in terms of plot or story. It has the necessary intrigue to draw the audience, for the mood and tone of the film are evidently visible just at first glance.

Ulidavaru Kandanthe (2013)

'Ulidavaru Kandanthe's poster effectively captures the ambiguity of an audience member. The film's story comprises many perspectives and many subjective truths but its sole voice of objectivity gets shown through its narrator, whose journey through an intricate puzzle sees many exponents at once - and this is exactly what the poster withholds too. There's an abundance of smaller, key narratives within the main story that ball up together slowly to become an avalanche, and the poster includes each component wisely. A great example of nuance, this one.

Thithi (2015)

'Thithi' is an atypical Kannada film and for many reasons so. It employs a non-professional cast and uses techniques of neo-realism to tell a rather dramatic story. There are doses of dead-pan humor, everyday stillness, and also a simmering sense of deceit that seems as perpetual in the village as Gadappa himself. Although there are many different posters of the film available, the one featuring Gadappa and his flowy and wiry silver beard (animated) is a fabulous design. This poster promises a joyous ride quite boldly and yet very interestingly, keeps general film conventions at an arm's distance.

Godhi Banna, Sadharana Mykattu (2016)

Hemanth M. Rao's debut feature is an emotional tale about search - on one hand, a son goes on a literal quest for a lost father, and on the other, the father looks for his own sanity and memory to return. Through carefully designed publicity material, the makers of the film were successful in setting the right tone for the audience and the posters, especially, promise an intriguing, slightly cryptic, and very personal story.

Rama Rama Re (2016)

D. Satya Prakash's 2016 drama 'Rama Rama Re...' is about many things. At the outset, it's a story about redemption and how one man's journey towards doom can quickly steer towards (quite literally) self-discovery. While features a great ensemble cast, the two central characters still wallow in isolation and loneliness. The poster of the film captures this essence beautifully and utilizes the vast open terrains of its world to express deep emotions.
