Beloved comedian of Kannada cinema, MS Umesh, dies at 80
Veteran Kannada actor MS Umesh passed away on Sunday, November 30, at the age of 80 after battling stage-four liver cancer. He had been hospitalised since October 10 following a fall at home, during which tests revealed his diagnosis.
Umesh’s tryst with the stage began at just four years old, and by fourteen, he had debuted in films. Over the next five decades, he appeared in more than 350 films, working with three generations of filmmakers. His passing marks the end of an era in Kannada cinema, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and performances that entertained generations.
Umesh was a rear blend of talent, warmth and wit: Ramesh Aravind
Though he had an expansive career, Umesh often spoke of his role in Venkata in Sankata, directed by Ramesh Aravind, as one of his most memorable — a performance many millennials instantly associate him with. Senior actor and filmmaker Ramesh Aravind fondly remembered Umesh’s versatility and warmth. Recalling their collaboration, Ramesh said, “We needed an old woman who could also be agile enough for slapstick comedy, and we couldn’t find the right person. Then we thought of Umesh anna. He loved the idea. I don’t know how he prepared — he arrived on set fully dressed as the old woman, and it was unbelievable. I couldn’t even recognise him. He was such a lovable human being. There are many talented people, but someone who is both gifted and genuinely kind is rare. His roles, from child artiste to adult performer, are legendary.”
