An exciting script matters more than the language it’s written in: Darshana Rajendran

Language no longer defines Darshana Rajendran’s choices— she says an exciting script will always win her over. “For a while, I thought I would only take up work in a language if I was fluent in it. But Telugu happened because the script excited me, even though I wasn’t familiar with the language at all. Now I feel that if the content excites me, I’ll do anything for it. I’ll find my way with the language and work as much as I can. Language isn’t a barrier anymore. If I’m offered a Kannada film that excites me, I will definitely do it,” says the actress, who was in Bengaluru with her theatre production Bye Bye Bypass, directed by Roshan Mathew.

‘BENGALURU IS WHERE I FEEL MOST AT HOME'
Darshana says Bengaluru is a city where she truly feels at home, not just for its vibe, but for the energy of its performance spaces. “What I really look forward to whenever I'm in the city is visiting the performance spaces here. Stepping into Ranga Shankara has always been a special experience for me. Whether it’s Jagriti or the Prestige Centre for Performing Arts, there’s a unique thrill in performing at these spaces.” Highlighting the city’s lively performance culture, she says, “Bengaluru has a very active theatre and cinema scene. But in a place like Kochi, which is actually a hub for most people from the cinema, there’s very little theatre that happens. Lately, there have been new performance venues and rehearsal spaces opening up, with theatre groups sprouting too.”

Opening up about her approach to choosing roles, she explains that she consciously steers clear of typecasting to keep her work fresh and challenging. “I know that if I take up similar roles, I’ll end up doing the same work repeatedly. So, when I’m narrated something and it feels like a familiar space, I try to avoid it—unless it really excites me and I simply can’t say no,” she says.
