Shankar Nag’s Kannada film ‘Ondi Muttina Kathe’ was one such film which made history for its direction when it turned out to be the first Indian film to be shot underwater.

‘Ondi Muttina Kathe’ is a 1987 film which was directed by Shankar Nag and featured Rajkumar and Archana in lead roles. This was the first Indian movie that was shot under water in the Maldives. Shankar Nag had bought a Canadian camera and brought in a German cameraman to shoot the film. Rajkumar had an underwater action sequence in the ocean without using an oxygen mask. And the team pulled it off beautifully.



The story of ‘Ondi Muttina Kathe’ is based on

John Steinbeck

's 1947 book ‘The Pearl’. This movie was a huge commercial and artistic success in Sandalwood.

Dr Rajkumar

played the character of Muttu who is a fisherman, who gets a precious pearl in the ocean and tries to sell it but faces many problems.
