The Rise Of Ashoka

The Rise of Ashoka unfolds in Avaratti, a village where a ritual offering of hair to a deity has gradually transformed into a controlled and exploitative system. What appears devotional on the surface operates as a profit-driven network overseen by Kutty Babji (Sampath Maithreya). Local barbers are systematically underpaid, threatened, and silenced. Any demand for fair wages is met with public brutality, reinforcing fear as a tool of control.



At the centre of the story is Ashoka (Sathish Ninasam), the son of Gangaraju (B. Suresha). Gangaraju endures years of quiet suffering, saving whatever little he earns to educate his son and secure him a respectable government position. Determined to protect Ashoka from the harsh realities of caste-based exploitation, he ensures his son remains detached from the oppressive environment shaping their community. The early portions of the film focus on Ashoka’s return after completing his studies and awaiting the results of his revenue officer examination, reflecting his father’s restrained hope for social mobility.



Chandranna (Gopal Krishna Deshpande), attempts to encourage awareness among the workers about their rights. Despite these efforts, intimidation continues under Kutty Babji and his son Jairam Babji (Yash Shetty). Parallel to the socio-political tension runs a romantic subplot between Ashoka and Ambika (Sapthami Gowda). Their relationship navigates affection, family negotiations, and emotional setbacks through the narrative in parallel.



The film’s turning point occurs near the interval when Ashoka becomes fully aware of the systemic oppression within his village. Choosing not to leave in pursuit of personal advancement, he decides to confront the entrenched structure that has long dictated the lives of his people. From this point, the narrative frames itself as a struggle between inherited power and emerging resistance led by an educated youth.



Although the premise addresses social hierarchy, economic exploitation, and generational change, its execution follows a familiar commercial trajectory. The central antagonist’s characterisation lacks nuance, and the exaggerated accent diminishes the intended intensity.



The screenplay also presents multiple logical gaps. Ashoka’s prolonged unawareness of the exploitation in his own surroundings raises questions, and the ambiguous time setting creates inconsistencies in tone and context. These elements weaken the credibility of the unfolding events.



Sathish Ninasam delivers moments of conviction but appears inconsistent across key emotional beats, resulting in stretches that feel staged. Sapthami Gowda’s performance gains strength toward the climax, though her earlier portions lack depth. Despite the involvement of seasoned actors such as Gopal Krishna Deshpande, B. Suresha, Sampath Maithreya, and Yash Shetty, the writing restricts the scope for layered portrayals. A brief appearance by Ravi Shankar adds familiarity without altering the narrative impact.



Technically, the film remains competent. The cinematography maintains a grounded visual texture, and the background score supports the dramatic progression effectively. From a production standpoint, the craft remains steady and polished.



Ultimately, The Rise of Ashoka presents a conventional narrative of resistance within a caste-structured society. While its themes are socially relevant, the predictable structure and uneven character development limit its overall effectiveness.
