Thayige Thakka Maga

Mohan Das is an angry young rebel who is brought up on a heady dose of principles and righteousness by his mother Parvathi. The duo fight against anything unjust and stand up for the victims. During one such ordeal, they take on an evil son of a big politician. Is this too big a battle for them to fight?
Shashank and Ajai Rao have previously given the romantic hits Krishnan Love Story and Krishna Leela. This time around, the duo move out of that space to give a commercial action drama. Does this newer attempt click? It does to an extent. But one wonders if the film ends up being a little too louder than it should have been.
Thayige Thakka Maga is about a mother and son and the title suggests. The film begins on a dramatic note that sets the tone of the film. The narrative then traces the growth and ways of the angry young rebel Mohan Das. In this journey, he finds love too. But, do his path to righteousness and his angry ways prove to be truant to his love story? Also, will his battle against an evil powerful politician prove to be his biggest and most daunting one yet?
The film has a rather generous dose of action, which also includes some gore. There are a lot of massy dialogues too to add to the macho testosterone element of the film. Ajai Rao wants to show he is more than the lover boy persona onscreen and he gives it his all. His earnestness is commendable and one gets to see his agility as an action hero. Sumalatha Ambareesh has a reasonably well-etched character written for her and she comes out impressive. Sourav Lokesh as the antagonist is menacing, but one wishes his character had a little more than the unidimensional portrayal shown. Ashika Ranganath has some emotional scenes that she excels in.
One wishes that the makers could have maybe cut down on the action a little, for it gets a bit too much towards the end. The climax is novel and engaging, but one wonders if the wait to the climax is a few minutes too long. All said, Thayige Thakka Maga has the necessary mass elements that one wants to watch on screen. But, whether the proportions are right is debatable. This could be your choice of film if you like the typical commercial potboilers.
