Palguni

Police officer Subhash (Nagendra Urs) arrives in a village after receiving an anonymous letter urging him to re-investigate a closed case involving Macha, a humble farm worker whose death had been ruled a suicide. Initially ready to close the matter again, Subhash eventually tracks down the sender of the letter, who begins to recount the story of Palguni (Rekha Shri), the daughter of the village’s Gowda.


The narrative takes us back to a celebratory event marking Palguni’s transition to womanhood, during which she is also engaged to her relative, Seena (Srinivas GT), an older man chosen by the family to keep the marriage within the clan. Everything appears harmonious, with vibrant depictions of the village fair, rituals, and traditions shown through song sequences.



However, Palguni falls in love with Macha, who works on her family’s farm. When her family and fiancé discover the affair, rage brews, giving way to deep-seated caste discrimination and violent opposition to their relationship. What follows is a clash between love and rigid social hierarchy, culminating in the events that Subhash must piece together to uncover the truth.



Despite its brief runtime, the film feels drawn out, with certain scenes overstaying their welcome. The writing lacks the strength and depth needed for a subject as sensitive as honour killing, and the relationship between Palguni and Macha isn’t developed enough to make the climax emotionally powerful. While the filmmakers devote significant attention to authentic rituals, ethnic songs, and cultural details, the storytelling and performances fail to deliver the emotional weight or narrative grip the topic demands.
