Maarnami follows the story of Chethu, a boy raised by his single mother, Jalaja (Sonu Gowda), who sells fish in a quiet coastal village. His childhood is shaped by deep affection, strong belief, and a close-knit community that includes his uncle Vasanthanna’s (Prakash Thuminad) family and friendly villagers. When he falls ill at a young age, his mother makes a vow to Goddess Mariamma, promising that he will perform Hulivesha during Maarnami if he recovers. He does get better, reinforcing her faith.

However, life takes a difficult turn when his mother is later diagnosed with tuberculosis. As her health declines, Chethu attempts to hold on to the same belief system that once worked in his favour, only to be confronted with the idea that destiny does not always respond to devotion. Her passing becomes the defining moment of his life.

Chethu (Ritvvikk Mathad) grows up under the care of his uncle and aunt, who treat him as their own. As an adult, he carries a single aspiration: to build a family and experience emotional completeness. Though he no longer performs Hulivesha himself, he remains associated with the local team led by Diwakaranna (Suman), while village rivalries and internal politics form another layer of the narrative.

The film then shifts focus to his relationship with Deeksha (Chaithra Achar). What begins as a wedding arrangement gradually turns into love, eventually leading to marriage despite opposition. For a while, life appears stable. But the screenplay introduces further complications, taking the story into more dramatic and emotionally turbulent territory.

In terms of performances, Ritvvikk Mathad portrays Chethu with visible vulnerability and controlled intensity, fitting the tone of the film. Chaithra Achar handles a character that goes through noticeable shifts, adding unpredictability to the romantic track. Prakash Thuminad delivers a steady presence as the uncle, while Sonu Gowda appears in a brief but effective role. The supporting cast contributes strongly to the grounded setting.

Technically, the film is sound. Cinematographer Shiva Sena captures the coastal backdrop and festival sequences with clarity, and the music composed by Charan Raj blends well with the emotional tone, supported by meaningful lyrics.

From a story standpoint, Maarnami is unusually heavy and deliberately complex. It does not offer easy emotional release or clear resolutions. The narrative moves at a restrained pace and, instead of simplifying conflicts, keeps adding layers of grief, moral confusion, and strained relationships. As it progresses, the tone grows darker and more unsettling. The slow burn may feel immersive to some, but for others it can become exhausting. The film often sits with discomfort rather than moving forward, and that persistence can either feel bold or unnecessarily drawn out.

This is not a film designed for universal appeal. It is intense, at times emotionally overwhelming, and occasionally uneven in how it handles its dramatic turns. The writing leans into chaos and unpredictability, which may come across as raw to some viewers and messy to others. Maarnami demands patience and emotional tolerance; without that, it can feel draining and even frustrating. While the performances and technical aspects remain strong, the storytelling itself is not for everyone — it is heavy, unconventional, and uncompromising in its bleakness.
