Kinaare

Innocent Ranga and Meera are two youngsters living in coastal Karnataka in a small town, where they suffer from intellectual disability, like many of their peers. Can their pure friendship survive in a world that is filled religious and political one upmanship?

This is yet another Kannada film set in the backdrop of coastal Karnataka. The film tries to capture the ethos of the area, while also telling a story about innocent love. The film also has another track that pits a religious henchman against the rational thinking doctors. In trying to narrate a story that covers all these parts, the filmmaker has made a film that is nearly three hours long in length.

What happens to be the problem with a film like Kinaare is that it is hard to point out what the basic tale it is narrating. Each of the threads seem to have importance at different times and this does not really work to the narrative's advantage. The film ends up being far too long an experience for one to endure eventually, with the songs being more of an impediment rather than an add-on to the tale.

The major highlight of this film is the cinematography, with the visuals of coastal Karnataka proving to be a treat. Although one wonders if the many drone shots are required in a film, which seems to be dealing with topics more intimate. The supporting cast is the highlight among the the actors, with the seasoned performers giving their best in a film that doesn't give them much scope. Kinaare tries to capture the essence of coastal Karnataka, but it does not really step up when it comes to delivering a narrative that is deftly packaged. Watch it, if you must.
