Gharga sets its tone early by building an intense myth around a forbidden land deep inside a forest, a place spoken of only in hushed, fearful tones. Gharga is described as a “land of shadows,” a zone where GPS fails, daylight offers no comfort, and entering is believed to be a one-way journey. Stories surrounding it are grim: people who venture in are either never seen again or return as unrecognisable, rotting corpses. Whether the threat is an animal, a monster, a ghost, or human evil remains unknown, but the certainty of danger gives Gharga an almost hellish reputation.

The narrative follows Vikram Adiga (Arun Ramprasad), a novelist determined to uncover the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of writer Mahabala Aithala. Accompanied by his driver Pundarika (Arun Sagar), Vikram ventures into the dreaded forest. Their journey itself is unsettling, marked by sudden bombings and unseen threats that reinforce the legends surrounding Gharga. Eventually, they reach Mahabala Aithala’s house and meet his son, Gajanana Aithala (Sai Kumar).

Contrary to the terrifying buildup, Gajanana’s home initially appears ordinary, inhabited by people living routine lives. However, this sense of normalcy quickly erodes. Disturbing events begin to unfold: an unexplained death of a cow, the brutal murder of a woman working at the house, and the hanging of a trusted worker. As fear escalates, Gajanana suspects the cause may be a cursed axe believed to belong to Lord Parashurama, suggesting a divine or supernatural trigger behind the chaos.

At a crucial point, the film shifts gears with a twist that redefines Vikram’s identity, his true intentions, and the reason behind the chain of events. Parallel threads also emerge: Sampath’s narration, a mysterious girl in a library who opens an enigmatic box, and a brief appearance by Rahul Dev that hints at a larger, unfinished puzzle. These elements suggest that Gharga’s secrets are far from fully revealed, clearly positioning the film as the first part of a larger story.

While the concept is ambitious and the ideas are inventive, the execution struggles to match the vision. The film leans heavily into exaggeration and drama, which weakens the impact of its mystery. Instead of building layered suspense, the narrative often feels cluttered and unfocused. The jump scares are predictable and fail to leave a lasting impression, and midway through, the story drifts away from its core mystery into a different dramatic direction. Despite the presence of experienced actors, the writing does not effectively support their performances.

Overall, Gharga is an interesting attempt at a mystery-thriller with mythological and supernatural undertones, but its potential is undermined by uneven writing and excessive dramatisation. For viewers who enjoy mystery thrillers and are willing to invest in a continuing story, this first instalment may still watch especially with the promise that deeper answers await in Part 2.
