The ongoing dispute between two entertainment agencies, HYBE and ADOR, has intensified with the emergence of ILLIT, a new girl group accused of copying NewJeans, an established group managed by ADOR. ILLIT's debut has sparked widespread discussion, with many mistakenly believing its members to be part of NewJeans due to perceived similarities in style and choreography.
NewJeans' performance directors have recently criticized HYBE and ILLIT for allegedly plagiarizing NewJeans' short choreography in a commercial. Kim Eun Ju, a performance director, expressed her frustration on Instagram, questioning the similarity between the choreography used in the ads and NewJeans' work. She remarked, "Oh? Really? Even the choreography for the ads? I've been holding it in for so long... Can we call this a coincidence? Sure, there can be similarities! But usually, when people take reference, they at least modify it a bit out of courtesy. But this is just straight-up copying."
Another performance director who previously worked with NewJeans BLACK.Q has voiced his dissatisfaction with ILLIT's latest release, "Lucky Girl Syndrome." In an Instagram story, he remarked,"Ah, no way... I've been holding back with thoughts like "No way, no way" all this time, but to go as far as copying the choreography for the ads... It's just unbelievable. The process that led to someone's hard work being so blatantly appropriated couldn't have been easy at all..."
The tension between the groups has been escalating for some time, with ILLIT previously facing accusations of copying choreography from NewJeans' songs like "Cookie," "Hype Boy," and "Super Shy." The situation underscores the competitive nature of the K-pop industry, where originality and innovation are highly valued.
For fans and observers, the dispute raises questions about artistic integrity and the boundaries of inspiration in popular music. While similarities between artists are not uncommon, direct replication without acknowledgment or modification raises ethical concerns.
As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how HYBE and ADOR will address the allegations and navigate the impact on their respective groups' reputations. The situation serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by artists and agencies in a competitive industry driven by creativity and originality.
