Jodie Comer joins Danny Boyle in his upcoming horror-thriller saga
Jodie Comer is set to enter the world of 28 Years Later, the much-anticipated continuation of Danny Boyle’s iconic horror-thriller saga. Directed by Boyle and written by longtime collaborator Alex Garland, the new instalment promises to blend emotional drama with the genre’s trademark intensity — with Comer at the heart of it.
Comer plays Isla, a bedridden mother grappling with serious illness while the world outside crumbles under the weight of infection and violence. “Spike and Isla provide a real thread of humanity and emotion while coping and surviving in this incredibly dangerous situation,” Comer explains, referring to Isla’s bond with her son, Spike.
For Comer, the role was a chance to be part of a world she’s long admired. “I was such a huge admirer of the first movie,” she says. “What really struck me about it was the element of danger and the throughline of humanity and emotion. With this new film, I was particularly impressed by the evolution of the infected and seeing how the people on the island live, cope, and manage to survive.”
To bring Isla’s deteriorating condition to life, Comer underwent a physical transformation under the guidance of makeup supervisor Flora Moody. “We made Jodie look sweaty and rough — and it’s very hard making Jodie look rough!” Moody jokes. “We gave her everything that we mere mortals usually suffer with, including eye bags, reddened eyes, and a grey palette.”
With this film, Boyle and Garland revisit the chilling universe they helped create — this time with Comer delivering the emotional heart of a story about survival, family, and the quiet resilience of humanity amidst chaos.
