Independence Day: 10 Bollywood patriotic heroes

On India's 68th Independence Day, we present you the actors who portrayed true spirit of patriotism and values of a democracy in a good light. Known for directing patriotic films, Manoj Kumar has given gems like Upkaar, Purab Aur Pashchim and Shaheed to Bollywood. His patriotic hero image earned him the name Bharat. So great and well known was his dedication to making films about patriotism that this veteran was rechristened Bharat Kumar during his time.

Aamir Khan acted in patriotic movies like Sarfarosh, Lagaan, Mangal Pandey and Rang De Basanti, which earned him accolades. While his portrayal of tough cop ACP Ajay Singh Rathod who fights to curb cross-border terrorism in Sarfarosh was highly praised, he starred in his ill-fated home production Mangal Pandey, playing the revered revolutionary.

Revered actor Raj Kumar played Brigadier Suryadev Singh, in Tirangaa, took against the nexus of terrorists and corrupt politicians conspiring against India. Raj Kumar's one liners and catch phrases in the movie became popular amongst audience.

Sunny Deol's Border and Gadar, which were based on patriotic theme, saw huge box-office success. Apart from these two movies, Sunny Deol appeared patriotic in quite a few films like The Hero: Love Story Of A Spy,Ek Prem Katha, 23rd March 1931: Shaheed, Maa Tujhe Salaam and Indian.

Ajay Devgn, the Singham of industry played the legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in his movie Legend Of Bhagat Singh. His potrayal of Bhagat Singh was lauded by both, critics and fans. In the 1996 film Diljale, Devgn plays Shaka, a patriotic college student who becomes a terrorist after being wrongly accused by his lover's rich and powerful father, who doesn't approve of their relationship. Ajay Devgn's patriotism doesn't end here as he is also seen in Singham as a very strict police officer who honest with his work.

With films like Krantiveer and Prahaar, Nana Patekar took the patriotism in the films to new heights. Nana Patekar for the movie Krantiveer also won National award and his performance in all his movies especially patriotic movies were appreciated by all and received accolades overseas. ---4:35

The movie Haqeeqat, which was supported by Indian government, was purely based on Indo-Sino war made ripples in Indian cinema with arousing patriotic songs. Dharmendra played the conflicted and guilt-ridden Satyapriya in 1969 film Satyakam. In 1964 war film Haqeeqat directed by Chetan Anand, he plays Captain Bahadur Singh, who rescues a small platoon of Indian soldiers. ---5:54

Hrithik Roshan's Lakshya was the story of an aimless ordinary boy's transformation into a brave, responsible and patriotic soldier. The movie was directed by Farhan Akhtar and Hrithik for his performance was appreciated. His role's trasition from being a clueless college student to a responsible army officer is carried off well by Hrithik. The movie also stars Preity Zinta.

Actor Arvind Swamy, in the movie Roja, brilliantly executed his role of being a patriotic officer. The movie Roja is a 1992 Tamil-language Indian political drama film. The movie is co-written and directed by Mani Ratnam and features Arvind Swamy and Madhubala in the lead roles. The film was subsequently dubbed in Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam and Telugu.
