Bringing Sahir Ludhianvi to life, actor Tom Alter staged the play Parchhaiyan at the Genesis Global School in Noida recently. Students from the school were enthusiastic participants in the play, which was a musical journey based on the life and works of the poet and lyricist. The play featured two characters – a young and an old Ludhianvi – narrating the poet’s life story in the form of a lyrical conversation.
While Alter played the role of an older Sahir, the younger Sahir was played by actor Akshay Maurya.
The script narrated India’s historical events in the mid-twentieth century, including India’s Independence, Partition and the havoc it wreaked, with the director using Ludhianvi’s poems as dialogues in the play, followed by his popular songs in the backdrop.
The play was conceptualised in a way that each dialogue seemed to explain what must have been going on in his mind when he wrote the song. Talking about Ludhianvi’s life, Alter said, “Sahir’s love poems were tinged with sorrow and his poetry was with the realisation that there are issues more important than romantic love. His words made songs immortal and they still continue to evoke magic and emotions.”
