'The Truth' play review

Plot: KC (Naseeruddin Shah) has a raging affair going on with his best friend Zed’s wife. As the affair gets intense, KC’s wife Avan starts asking him some tough questions and he has no option, but to lie his way out of the tough spots.

Review: Having an extramarital affair can be tricky. But having it with your best friend’s wife is a whole new ball game, and protagonist KC is playing it rather well. A rouge to the core, lies are KC’s currency and he uses them like a poor guy who’s suddenly turned rich and is on a spending spree. He lies to just about everyone he can, be it his wife, his best friend and even his lover, so he can live in his own carefree way. And the result is hilarious.

Watching Naseeruddin Shah fumble around as he invents story after story is a delight to watch. He has nailed the character written by French playwright Florian Zeller. The play gets interesting as we see KC realise that he may not be the sharpest tool in the shed and that there is much more to the whole game that he is playing.

, too, nails her character as the detached yet suspecting wife who almost knows how to deal with her husband. Meher Mistry as Lovelin, KC’s demanding lover, gives an enjoyable performance as does Gautam Sharma as Lovelin’s husband who is being back-stabbed.

While the play is a comedy, it does make you realise the emotional cost of having an affair, and just what it feels to be cheated on. A must watch indeed.
