Last weekend, Mumbaikars went back in time with the classic Broadway, ‘The Sound of Music’. Produced by Raell Padamsee, the play was every bit magnificent what with live singing and a huge star cast.

Based on the memoir 'The Story of the Trapp Family Singers' by

Maria von Trapp

, it was an inspiration for a West German movie, ‘The Trapp Family’. This was later staged in 1959 post which it was adapted into a movie (‘The Sound of Music’, 1965), which starred Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer with Richard Haydn and Eleanor Parker. The story is about a postulant, who is too high-spirited for a religious life, and is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the kids, coupled with her generosity, gradually wins the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon, they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland during World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in theatre.
