A Nashik-based theatre group staged its Hindi play Ram Sajeevan ki Prem Katha at Kalidas Kala Mandir recently. The play, directed by Anshu Singh, is based on a short story written by contemporary Hindi writer Uday Prakash. The story revolves around the titular character Ram Sanjeevan, who hails from a small village in Bihar. He comes to Delhi to study at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University.
As time passes, Ram starts reading about Karl Marx and his ideologies. He starts dreaming of a utopian society where equality and socialistic nature prevails. At the same time Ram also finds himself falling for Anita Chandiwala.
The play is laced with symbolism where Ram is termed ‘insane’ by the corrupt society that does not accept his idealistic views. It talks about the conflict and disconnect between ideology and social reality, through Ram and his obsessive love for Anita. It also touches upon the subjects of classism and casteism in our society.
Singh, who plays the lead, said that he enjoyed performing this play in Nashik. “Playing a character like Ram puts you into a very meditative state and provides you with a platform wherein you can look at yourself through someone else’s eyes,” he added.
