The idea that acting can be a powerful tool to socially reform a cold-blooded convict is what inspired the beginning of prison theatre in Karnataka almost two decades ago. The success of this project led to many such performances in different parts of the country. Now, the inmates of jails in Bangalore, Mysore and Dharwad will stage a three-day regional theatre festival in Mumbai for the very first time. The fest, which will happen on May 15, 16 and 17 in Matunga, is the first of its kind in the city. Theatre director Hulugappa Kattimani, who started this theatre project, says, “The inmates of this prison repertory have been granted permission to travel to different cities and stage their plays there. In Mumbai, we have spoken to the respective prison departments and the inmates’ stay will be arranged at one of the city jails.”
The highlight of the festival is that it will showcase an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. “The reason we often stage Shakespeare is because his plays have the underlying themes of revenge and guilt, which make prisoners repent for their crimes. In an entertaining manner, serious social messages like these are conveyed to them. We believe reformation in prisoners can be done through theatre,” says Kattimani.
