Munshi Premchand

’s 136th birth anniversary on July 31, a drama academy will stage several plays based on his short stories as a part of its annual festival. Called ‘Prem Utsav’, close to 100 plays and readings of almost 36 plays will be held over 12 days from July 31 to August 11.

With idealistic undertones to socially-relevant topics, Premchand’s works were far-sighted and had a modern approach, which helped in bringing about a change in society. When the festival first started in 2006 it showcased only 24 plays. Since then, the event has only gone bigger and better with every passing year.
