Set against the backdrop of social stratification and pseudo-nationalism impacting Indian society today, ‘Nona’, a Malayalam socio-political satirical play will be staged in Mumbai end of this month at NCPA. A collective project with non-professional actors, it is directed by the acclaimed Malayalam theatre personality, Jino Joseph, who had also scripted, designed and directed another award-winning the Malayalam play ‘Matthi’.

Nona
Set in rural India, it tells the story of Govindan, his family and neighbours and highlights the issue of casteism. The narrative is about how Govindan’s conniving son Prasanth, through his project of an advertisement film about the map of India in his courtyard, creates boundaries that change the dynamics of a peaceful and connected community. Ultimately, the villagers with the help of Govindan see through the sly motive of Prasanth and fight him back. The play culminates with the villagers rejoicing after wiping out the boundaries created by Prasanth.
The play has won theatre awards for the Best Play, Best Director, Best Stage Design, and Best Light Design. The play stars Midhun Musafar, A K Shaji, Priya K S among others.
