Antara Mitra, who is the voice behind hit songs like Gerua, Janam Janam and Saree Ke Fall Sa, says she can never thank composer Pritam Chakraborty enough for inspiring her as a musician. “He probably doesn’t understand what kind of a treasure he is. He is a genius with a childlike heart and major forgetfulness and mismanagement (laughs). So, working with Pritam da means you are all the time on a fun ride,” says the singer, adding that she cannot overlook the kind of influence he has had on her.

“I was only a singer before, but

music

is much more than just singing a

song

. This is something I learnt in

dada

’s (Pritam) studio. I got to understand the nitty gritty of songwriting, recordings and mixing,” says Antara.

She says Pritam has helped her, not just professionally, but also on a personal level. She says, “In the last 12 years of knowing Pritam da, this has happened several times that whenever I felt low and thought that nothing great was happening in my career, he always told me, ‘Being number one is not important all the time, it’s important to go on. The fact that you do music for your living which is your passion is a blessing in itself.’ This has been a life lesson for me.”

Antara enjoyed recording the song Aira Gaira (

Kalank

) with Pritam recently. Ask her about the experience of working on the song, and she says, “It gave me a chance to sing in

thumri

and kajri style, which you generally don’t get in film music these days. I was around when the song was in the making and the process amuses me. It’s like building a house -- one tile on another, breaking and rebuilding again. I can live in a studio for the rest of my life just for this amazing experience that enriches you from within.”
