World famous DJ John Digweed in Mumbai

Bryan Durham gets the dope on what the world-famous DJ is up to ahead of his performance in the city today
If you’re tuned in to progressive house or quite simply been to any major dance music event, it is highly unlikely that you’ve never heard of John Digweed. Nevertheless, here’s an introduction. Born in England, this DJ has been a global name for a decade now, credited with having the first proper DJ mix collaboration with long time collaborator Sasha.
But Digweed isn’t just a DJ. The much-revered artiste is also a successful producer and promoter and his alias Bedrock is also the name of his record label and production studio with Nick Muir. Quality is a byword when his name comes up. While one production has made it to the cult film Trainspotting, he has even scored the music for Hollywood flick Stark Raving Mad and Spiderman (for TV), even taking acting credits on a movie on DJs called Groove.
His gigs and collabs are sold-out events. His radio show Transitions is now in its 10th year and is still one of the most successful dance music shows, broadcast to over 30 countries across the world to a weekly audience of over 12 million.
We catch up with him ahead of his performance tonight and tomorrow at a city nightclub.
What can you tell us about the Structures Two album and about this tour? Structures Two is a triple CD with a live set recorded at Avalon in Los Angeles, and a downtempo chillout mix of Bedrock label artists and a CD full of Bedrock exclusives. Which has been your most memorable gig in India? Bangalore and Mumbai were both amazing. Really energetic crowds!
How long will the Mumbai set last? Depends on how long they let me play... over two hours at most gigs, I hope.
When are you collaborating with Sasha (Alexander Coe) and (Nick) Muir again? I have just finished a remix with Nick Muir of the new Psycatron track Memories Of The Moment plus we have an exciting project due out March 2012.
Most DJs don’t really do well in films. Your Hollywood acting stint happened in blink-and-miss releases. Would you still do something interesting if it came your way? Well Groove was not a box office smash, but it is crazy how many people around the world have seen that movie. So in the electronic scene, the movie was a success. I have no plans to go in front of the camera anytime soon again.
Care to chart your journey from Bedrock, through the Transitions era to now? I always wanted to be a DJ and worked incredibly hard from the start to make it to the top. You have to be committed and play with passion and deliver 100 per cent at every gig. I love what I do and I think people see that I am very passionate about the scene I work in. For me, the electronic house and techno sound is the sound that I am pushing the most at the moment.
