Lyricist Sameer who has written rather youthful songs for the recently released film FALTU feels that “youth does not necessarily mean being vulgar.” Reacting to the controversy surrounding the rather objectionable lyrics of the title track of film Dum Maro Dum on his visit to Banaras, he says that “writers who are taking resort to vulgar lyrics on the pretext of catering to the demands of the youth, could hog the limelight for some time but it would take them no where in the long run.
Infact remixes should not be attempted at unless they add something to the original number. I am sure all these controversies would end once the Copyright Act comes into being,” says the lyricist.
Sameer who is currently penning lyrics for projects like Ekta Kapoor's film, Shor, In The City ,Sajid Khan's Housefull 2 says though “UP and Bihar is now visible in Bollywood with lots of films being made from this region but the music of the region is yet to get its true representation. This is possible only if the lyricist of the film belongs to that area. As the writers through the correct usage of language can bring the flavour of the region in the songs. Since my father Anjaan belonged to Banaras so he could give the true Banarasi feel to the song khaike paan banaras wala where the word 'kaike' truly adding to the charm of the song. Similarly in the track of Main Jat Yamala Pagala Deewana from Pratigya, the lyricist of the song
Anand Bakshi who hailed from Punjab used 'ittee see bat na jana' truly bringing the flavour of region”, he says
Having a Banaras connect, Sameer says that “ I was hoping that I would be given preference in the Dr Chandra Prakash Dwivedi directed and
Sunny Deol starring Mohalla Assi that uses a lot of colloquial language of Banaras and neighbouring areas but then the discretion lies with the director of the film. The lyrics I have heard are being written by Gulzar Sahab. I am just waiting to hear how the songs of the film turn out to be,” he says.
