Noted sitar player and Grammy nominee Shujaat Khan was spotted at a music store in Delhi recently. Music fans crowded the venue to catch a glimpse of the classical singer who comes from an a long line of musical ancestors. Shujaat obliged his fans and sang a few of his best songs, like “Lajo Lajo” and “Main Tere Ishq Mein”. “Earlier, like some years back, it was all about remixes.
But, the last five years, the music scene has been about good lyrics and melodies,” he said. Talking about lyrics, we quizzed the singer about the recent row between the film industry and lyricists, and he joked, “Whose side is Javed Akhtar on?” adding, “It is more about ego hassles. People enjoy fighting over every little thing. If people try to give more space to each other then it would be better.”
Shujaat was also talking highly of the current Bollywood music scene. “It is brilliant right now,” he said, adding that he takes interest in other genres of music too.
Talking about his upcoming albums Shujaat said, “I am doing an album titled “Naam Gum Jaega”. I am also going to tour with Ashaji. I have liked “Chura Liya” since childhood.”
We also asked the singer about his favourite places in Delhi, he said, “There is this lane near Odeon Cinema, where you get the best gulab jamuns to eat. I also love going to Karim’s and I like kebabs. I love Indianized Punjabi Chinese food which is available on the streets. However, I am not a big fan of Chinese food otherwise.”
Talking about the people of Delhi, Shujaat brought up the recent case of a man being shot ,when he dropped a plate of chicken while serving, “Look at the anger people have. Someone shoots another just over a spilled plate of food. Kal ko main ja raha honga, mera kandha aapse takra jaega aur aap mujhe goli maar doge?” he asked.
The music maestro, who was at the store with his son, chatted with the salespersons at the music store about his album sales. The salesperson at the store told him they were selling like hot cakes. The singer left the store with a smile.
