Grab the first tee (preferably torn!), slip into a comfy pair of jeans, and let your hair down – probably, the first rules of attending a music concert, eh? Well, these weren’t quite adhered to when it came to Pitbull’s high-voltage performance at the MMMRDA grounds, Bandra. Instead Mr. Worldwide, born Armando Christian Perez, popularly called Pitbull, was magnet to a young ‘Bandra’ crowd that boasted of chic dresses, high stilettos and manicured nails.
Hot pants, off-shoulder dresses seemed to be the order of the day. It reminded one of a prom evening, where a happening group would form a train link and break into and around the crowd every once in a while, amusing themselves as they waited patiently for their favourite rapper.
And then he came. And there was a roar. “Thank you, Mumbai, for having us.” And there was that roar again. Dressed in a tuxedo and black shades, he told the crowd ‘Give me everything’, and they did just that! With their hands high in the air, and their feet a little above the ground, everyone seemed to be wearing their hearts – happy, broken or mended – on their designer sleeves, as they lip-synced and danced to Pitbull’s most popular numbers. Energy poured as he brought on the famous Let it rain over me, Hey baby, and Hotel room service.
The performer spoke of Mumbai: ‘What I love about Mumbai and its people is that they are rich in tradition, rich in culture; they love their food; they love their flag; they love their women; they love their music…’ and suggested, “So I think we should introduce you guys to a little bit of our culture…” What followed was a little Spanish gig. (And that roar again!).
Well, if there’s anything else other than rapping that Pitbull knows how to do, it is dance, and get the people On the floor (albeit with special thanks to
Jennifer Lopez!). His 45-minutes non-stop live-wire performance defined by both gusto and grace kept the hip-n-hep well entertained. By the end of it, he was convinced of a mutual admiration: I know you want me, want me, You know I want ya, want ya…
The evening came to an end in perfect harmony – no snapped straps, no broken heels. The youngsters left meticulously, some in chauffer driven cars. But what all had in common was a reeling head from an enthralling ‘Pit’fall!
