Surabhi Dashputra: My classical training keeps me grounded in a fast-moving industry

Classical vocalist Surabhi Dashputra believes that while music trends continue to evolve, the fundamentals of sur, taal and riyaaz remain timeless.

“As a classically trained singer and songwriter, I’ve seen trends come and go, but the value of sur, taal and regular riyaaz has always stayed the same for me. Even though today’s music moves very fast, I don’t let that noise affect me. My training keeps me grounded,” she says.

Her time in the UK further shaped her musical perspective. “Performing at different events and being exposed to so many styles of music opened me up to a global space. It helped me understand how different audiences connect with sound, and that influences how I collaborate today.”

Speaking about challenges, she highlights patience and visibility. “Talent matters, but timing and the right opportunities matter just as much. There are times when you don’t see quick results, and that can be discouraging.” However, she acknowledges the power of digital platforms. “My music is being heard in over 100 countries, and that is very encouraging.”

What makes Surabhi’s music compelling is her ability to retain classical nuance while adapting to modern soundscapes. Ludhiyane Waleya reflects this shift well, with her voice anchoring the track even as it leans into a more energetic.

Looking ahead, Surabhi is keen on exploring folk fusion and contemporary devotional music. “Indian folk has raw emotion, and blending it with modern production can create something special.
