Sophie Sugar loves all kinds of music

Hailed as the Queen of trance, Sophie Sugar is all set to regale party people this weekend with her new set. TOI catches up with her ahead of the show
Sophie Sugar loves all kinds of music
She has been heralded as the Queen of Trance by none other than trance top shot Armin Van Buuren. A top music magazine called her UK’s foremost female trance producer. After having toured the world over, Sophie is all set to grace the city over the weekend.
And the stage name Sophie Sugar is apt as she always has the crowd eating out of her hands. On her second tour to India, Sophie says she is very excited to be playing here.
“I played here last year for Imran Hayath and had an amazing tour so when he asked me back again I agreed straight away.

I love it here. The people are so friendly and love their trance music,” she says in a telephonic interview from UK.
Sophie was always a music lover — playing the piano for eight years and collecting records from the tender age of six! In her teens, she became involved in the club scene, fell in love with trance music and began DJing. In 2004 she was delighted to win the prestigious Gallery/DJ Magazine DJ competition. In 2005 and 2006, Sophie released the hugely successful tracks Call of Tomorrow' and Isis, which received support from many of the world’s top DJs including Paul Van Dyk and Armin Van Buuren.
For the uninitiated, trance is a sub-genre of electronic dance music that is characterisedby its slightly different tempo. Speaking about trance music in the city, Sophie assures us that we definitely know our club music, even international ones. “The last time I was here, I played exactly what I usually do and people seemed to recognise almost all the tracks,” she adds.
But EDM landscape is ever changing and no two years are similar. Talking about the latest trends in the genre, she says, “Things have slowed down a fair bit vis-à-vis tempo. But very recently I noticed a few artists speeding things up again! So I think that could be where we’re headed next.”
Being a DJ, she does not limit her choice of music to trance only. “I love all kinds of music as long as it’s emotional in some way. So, love songs and film soundtracks feature highly on my ipod,” she says with a laugh.
After her gig in India, Sophie will be busy with a ton of things, like bringing out new tracks. 'Ismail Darbar to join BJP'
