Classical singer Shubha Mudgal's association with Lucknow is a long one. In town to perform at an ongoing cultural fest, the singer said the memories she has of Lucknow, which she used to visit, as a kid are warm and beautiful. The Allahabadi-born singer recalls those days and says, "I always used to be excited about coming to Lucknow. Because it mostly used to be for music competitions and I would meet lovely people here." Telling us about what's special about singing for Lucknowites, Shubha says, "The people here are very receptive.
It's as if music is seeped deep in their souls. One makes an instant connection with the audience here."
Busy making music of all genres, be it poetry of Bhartendu Harshchandra or pure classical, Shubha has released a fusion album titled 'A Stranger Here' with Israeli musicians last year.
Telling us about it, Shubha says, "There's is electronic music, and though I don't know much about electronic music, it was great fun making the album. It was a learning experience for me and collaborating with people to make something unique and new is always good," says she, adding that she is concentrating more on stage shows these days than producing album. She further adds, "As a musician I don't see why I should confine myself to just one genre of music. I enjoy dabbling in pop, folk, classical, fusion, semi-classical and that's what I do."
Though her videos of songs Ab Ke Saawan, Seekho Na have, to name a few have been very popular, Shubha says, she would rather just sing than get videos made of her songs. "I don't really like the concept of videos. One is singing a devotional song and there would be a girl in a bikini dancing to it. It doesn't make any sense. In any case I was only singing in the music videos of my songs, not acting in them, thankfully."
Another-no-no for Shubha is singing or composing for films. "I don't think I'm cut out for filmy music. I'm not very comfortable with the idea of singing for films," she says.
