Shannon K: I was told to fit in and not dream big

Shannon K is gradually emerging from the giant shadow of her father, the popular

Bollywood

singer Kumar Sanu who has given us some of the biggest chartbusters in the last three decades of his career.

She has created a space for herself as a young singer and songwriter in the music industry. However, she did not have it easy.

She shares, “I had been afraid of putting my true self out there initially. I was told to fit in and not dream big. I was also to change my style to be accepted by people. Somewhere, I felt like I was cheating myself by being someone else.”

Shannon says that she has realised that her uniqueness is special and now she takes pride in her colour and conveys her ethnic roots and reveals her Indian cultural side through her new song. “My song ‘Run’ is a personal interpretation of self-confidence and dreams. It is a motivation to everyone, who needs some encouragement to be themselves," she says.

The music video has been directed by Shannon's younger sister,

, and has been shot partially in Jaipur and

Los Angeles

. They wanted to showcase the culture of the most beautiful cities in India.
