He is a pop singer by profession and now a social activist by choice. Shankar Sahney has taken it upon himself to bring to the notice of the government and the authorities the pathetic living conditions in his colony, the Freedom Fighter Enclave near Saket. In his new avatar as an activist, Sahney prefers to devote a few hours every day to discuss civic issues of the colony with other residents and decide what needs to be done to deal with such problems.
He says, I have been living in this area for the so many years now and I have noticed that when it comes to finding a way out of civic problems, the authorities just happen to look the other way. There are several problems that the residents of this area have been facing. But the main problem is the scarcity of drinking water. According to Sahney, there is no regular water supply to this area.
The pipelines were laid several months ago. Residents now have to depend on boring wells which is a costly proposition. Most of the boring wells have dried up as the population of the colony has increased manifold. Water is supplied to the colony through water tankers, says Sahney. The speeding tankers have also proven to be a great nuisance for the residents. The newly constructed roads stand a chance to be damaged due to the leaking water from the tankers, he adds. Another problem that these tankers create is the blocking of the footpaths and the roads. When there is no proper footpath, how will the commuters move? questions the pop singer. A lot of times the residents have to buy water from private tankers as the tankers sent by the Delhi Jal Board have no motor to pump water. The private water tankers charge a hefty amount, complain the residents of the area.
The pop singer also pointed out the encroachment that has taken place on the main road of the colony. The main arterial road to this colony has been encroached upon. The widths of the main road have been considerably reduced, resulting in frequent traffic jams on the road.
