Grammy award-winning American House music DJ, Roger Sanchez, talks to TOI about the European party scene and his second trip to India
What is the European party scene like? The European party scene is now characterised more by the experience and not just the music. Whether it’s a foam party, dry ice, cannons, gigantic screens or people in costumes, it’s about taking the party experience beyond just the music.
How has House music caught on the world over? When I started, the scene was very underground and local, whereas now, House music is a global phenomenon! House music started in the 70s as disco and has evolved since then and across the world it’s more or less become the music of choice across nightclubs. In other words, Electronic Dance Music is everywhere. How excited are you to perform in Kolkata?I’m very excited and can’t wait to interact with my fans. It’s good to know that the electronic music scene is big in Kolkata. Is this your first trip to India? No, I have performed in Goa in 2009. Though, this will be my first performance in Hyderabad and Kolkata. Do you think India is at par with the party scene abroad?Today, electronica has grown by leaps and bounds, with more and more musicians breaking through and making noise on the international Electronic Dance Music scene. What do you have special in store for Kolkatans? Some sexy sounds to rock the dancefloor! Are you aware of Indian DJs? Is there anyone you would want to collaborate with for an album? The one I know the most is Talvin Singh, whose work I have admired for ages, but I am definitely into the sounds that have been coming from the Indian scene. Tell us about your forthcoming album. My new album will be a progression from Come with me and more indicative of where I am now in my sound and life.British pop singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor has recorded a track for your album. How was it working with her?I produced a song that the Nervo Girls wrote to and Sophie sang on it. Unfortunately, it didn’t make it on her album and the label won’t allow me to release it on mine. Sophie is a talented artiste and it was great working with her.Follow us on Twitter for more stories
