He came, he visited and he prayed. On Friday evening, amid the squalls that impacted traffic across the city, Oscar winner Resul Pookutty paid a quiet visit to the Nizamuddin Dargah in the city before heading back to Mumbai.
While friend and Oscar-winning musician, AR Rahman, is a regular at the dargah, this was Resul’s first time at the holy place, and he spent over an hour speaking to the dargah-in-charge, Syed Afsar Ali Nizami, about the activities of the dargah.
Resul offered the traditional chaadar and flowers on both the mazaars at the dargah, while also taking a tour of the place along with the incharge. During the tour, Nizami told Resul and his friends about the various Bollywood biggies who’ve visited the dargah recently, including Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, among others. He said, “Sajid-Wajid used to come here so many times when “Dabangg” was about to release. They would sit here at night and constantly offer their prayers. Rahman bhai toh comes here very regularly. When “Jai Ho” had won the Oscars, the whole dargah had been decorated. ” Resul was accompanied by friend and head of his foundation Ramesh Menon, who told us, “Resul had been longing to come here for a while now, and it seems his calling here had to be on a divine day. The maulviji told us that it’s auspicious since we’ve come on a Friday, and more so because it just rained, which means that all negativity was washed out before we entered this holy place.” While leaving for the airport, Resul told us, “I have the highest regard for this place, and I also feel a very strong connect with it.”
Resul is also a regular at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan, and had visited it last year with Rahman and director Shekhar Kapur. Appalled by the hygiene around the place, Rahman and Resul had requested the PM’s office to sanction funds for cleaning the area around the dargah. The funds were approved this year.
