Shilpa Rao has fond memories attached to the Republic Day celebrations. The Ghungroo, Besharam Rang singer says, “When I was in school we would have a parade and march-past on the 26th January. We would be there all ready for the celebrations early in the morning and we would sing the National anthem. It would make me feel so happy and proud that I am an Indian.”

Shilpa adds, “Later, even at home patriotic fervour would continue. I still remember my father explaining to me why patriotic songs are sung and the relevance of the 26th January and the 15th of August and how our people fought for our freedom. I feel it's really necessary for all children to know all this. Even if it's not the 26th of January, but any other day, one should not forget the sense of duty for our nation, the feeling of love and patriotism.”

The singer says that while there have been many songs over the years in the film industry that evoke such feelings two of the recent ones she loves are Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna and ‘Mera Rang De Basanti Chola’ from the film The Legend of Bhagat Singh. “These are two of my favourite patriotic songs and I find them to be extremely inspiring. The lyrics and music of a patriotic song really affects the track because you can get touched only so much by the voice. When you hear Sukhiji (Sukhwinder Singh) singing these songs from the film The Legend of Bhagat Singh, it really gives you goosebumps, and this is what we feel for our country. I think we have so many legendary songs that give the sense of pride that you belong to such a glorious country that is known for its diversity, for people who come from different nooks and corners and then are all together as one. It gives a sense of pride and togetherness.”
