Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has responded to the recent controversy surrounding a viral video depicting him hitting a man, identified as his protege, Naveed Hasnain, with a shoe.

In a conversation with Adeel Asif on a podcast, Rahat shared insights into the incident, asserting that the physical interaction was a form of disciplinary action within the teacher-student relationship.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan acknowledged the widespread criticism the video received on social media and explained that he had indeed apologised to Naveed for the incident. According to Rahat, Naveed, whom he referred to as his shagird (protege), became emotional during the apology, expressing confusion about the disciplinary actions. Rahat defended his role, stating, "I am his teacher. I have played the role of his father."

In the podcast interview, Rahat emphasised the mentorship dynamic, describing it as a paternal responsibility. He stated, "It's like a fatherly role. There is a need to be a father to the student. I have fulfilled that role."

The singer further clarified that he has been actively supporting Naveed's family by covering medical expenses and contributing to wedding costs. Rahat underscored the intensity of the situation, explaining that it involves his spiritual guide, and urged people to comprehend the complexity of the matter.

The initial viral video showed Rahat Fateh Ali Khan slapping and kicking Naveed Hasnain over a 'bottle,' which the singer later identified as "holy water." Addressing the criticism, Rahat stated, "It’s a very serious matter for me as it involves my spiritual guide."

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan expressed frustration over the trolling and explained that the video was recorded by someone attempting to tarnish his image. He referred to the incident as an "internal matter" within the context of the teacher-student relationship, emphasising that such disciplinary actions are part of the mentorship process.

In a separate video, Rahat clarified the situation, stating, "When a protege does a good job, we shower a lot of them, and when they make a mistake, we punish them as well... I had apologised to him at the same time."
