Musical gathering commemorates Bhupen Hazarika’s centenary

A musical evening titled Ganga Behti Ho Kyun marked the centenary of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, with performances by Mayukh Hazarika, Anup Jalota, Suresh Wadkar, and Zubeen Garg. Usha Mangeshkar and Anup Jalota recalled his ability to unite people and celebrate Assam’s culture through timeless music.

A musical evening was organised to commemorate the centenary of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika. Aptly titled Ganga Behti Ho Kyun, the evening featured magnificent performances of Bhupen da’s songs by artistes such as his nephew Mayukh Hazarika, Anup Jalota, Suresh Wadkar, and Zubeen Garg. Songstress Usha Mangeshkar was also felicitated at the event.

Sharing her memories, Usha said, “I feel blessed to have worked with Bhupen da and to have shared unforgettable moments with him. His music transported me to the world of Assam and the Northeast. He always fondly called me Uxa instead of Usha.”

Echoing the sentiment, Anup Jalota added, “He was not just a musician but someone who united society through his music. His melodies connected people of all ages and backgrounds. Assam’s culture shone through his songs, making one feel as though they were experiencing the very fragrance of the land. Artistes like him bring together the world, the nation, and society through their art. He truly is a Bharat Ratna in every sense and will always be remembered.
