Music is for my personal space: Milind
It’s surprising to find a politician, especially an Indian one, holding a guitar on a Saturday evening. But when it comes to south Mumbai Congress MP Milind Deora, it’s just one of the things that are different about him.
The 33-year-old son of union minister for petroleum and natural gas Murli Deora, who’s one of the youngest members of parliament in the country, is also a seasoned blues guitarist.

He’s been playing for almost a decade now, and is regularly spotted jamming in Mumbai, whenever time permits.
But it was destination Delhi last Saturday, when Milind got jamming with the band Soulmate. He said, “I began playing the guitar in school, but at that time, it was very basic music. It’s only when I went to the US for my bachelor’s degree that I really got into blues. After that, I just liked it very much and have now been playing the guitar for almost 10 years.”
But a politician who’s also a musician is quite an unconventional thing, isn’t it? Milind replies, “A politician who is also a musician is an aberration anywhere in the world, not just in India. Perhaps an American president who plays the guitar could be acceptable, but anywhere else, I don’t think so.” That said, Milind adds that his profession and passion would never come together. “My music is for my personal space,” he says, “It’s for me only. It’s my passion, recreation and relaxation. My professional life is completely separate from it.”
Where He Was
Milind Deora jammed with Soulmate from Shillong, one of the most prominent blues band in India, on Saturday. He has also performed earlier with Buddy Guy, an American blues guitarist, in Mumbai. Among other musicians, he enjoys Stevie Ray Vaughan’s music
