Leading singers, writers and musicians from the Hindi film industry gathered to celebrate the memory of composer Khayyam at Model Town, Andheri Friday. The 92-year-old stalwart passed away Monday.

The tribute was assembled by the Indian Singers' Rights Association (ISRA),Talat Aziz and

Sonu Nigam. Aziz

sang '

Zindagi jab bhi

' and '

Phir chhidi raat

' on Khayyam's own harmonium, and urged fans to visit his grave at Four Bungalows to pray for his soul.

Nitin Mukesh sang 'Noorie'. He recalled how Khayyam had arrived at his home after his father Mukeshji's death, and repaid a substantial debt the family did not even know of. Alka Yagnik, Salim Merchant, Pratibha Singh Baghel, Sudesh Bhosle, Abhijeet, Sanjeevani Bhelande and Bela sang his songs. Anandji shared his stories.

Tabla nawaz Raj Sharma, who played in all his films, and sarangi artiste Sabir Khan, whose father Ustad Sultan Khan was also a regular accompanist, mesmerised listeners. Col. Bains and Virinder Sidhu, nephews of Jagjit Kaur, Khayyam's wife, recalled memories of their aunt and uncle. Sidhu shot pictures of Sanjeevani as she sang Jagjitji's 'Tum apna ranj o' gham'.

In a touching finale devised by Sonu Nigam, all artistes rose on stage, the lights of the auditorium were turned out and they sang 'Woh subah kabhi toh aayegi' holding candles. The audience rose to its feet and joined the chorus.
