After two decades as a reggae and dancehall performer,
Sasi The Don
is out with his sixth studio album. The musician says that making an album is not what it used to be like earlier.
“Well, album recording is not what it used to be back in the days. We’d make 12-15 songs per album, there’d be a sense of appreciation from listeners. It was a totally different ecosystem. Today we live in a time where it’s about creating an impact with your content, whether it’s one song, or more than one, it’s all about every song making an impact. We do not have any time for fillers," he says. In his new album he has five songs and five additional tracks which include remixes of his past releases.
Sasi The Don is no stranger to our country. With grandparents from
South India
, he grew up listening to
Tamil music
. “Indian music is a part of my life and that is what I have been growing up to, that’s what I have been listening to while I was growing up. I come from an Indian middle class family. While growing up it was all about Tamil and I love Tamil music. It has a great influence discovering
AR Rahman
back in the 90's and also having the opportunity to meet him twice in my life.”
He says he used to watch Bollywood music too. “I don’t understand Hindi but I pick up the music,” he says.
The Malaysian musician believes that there is magic in Indian music. “I have always an Indian element in my songs. It has been very promising that
Indian music
is at the top of the world today and it has been growing. It has a great influence and great vibe. People notice it as it has a magic. And I am a part of that magic.”
