Lalit Pandit criticizes Kumar Sanu for not crediting Jatin-Lalit and Anand Bakshi for 'Tujhe Dekha To' from 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'
Lalit Pandit of the renowned composer duo Jatin-Lalit expressed his disappointment over singer Kumar Sanu's lack of acknowledgment for the contributions of lyricist Anand Bakshi and the composers themselves in the success of the iconic song 'Tujhe Dekha To' from the film 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'(DDLJ). Released in 1995, DDLJ has since become a cornerstone of Bollywood romance, with its music playing a significant role in its enduring appeal.
The song "Tujhe Dekha To," performed by Lata Mangeshkar and Kumar Sanu, is one of the most memorable tracks from the film. Lalit Pandit revealed that despite the song's massive popularity, Kumar Sanu frequently claimed ownership of the song, disregarding the pivotal roles played by the composers and lyricists. Pandit underscored that the creation of a song is a collaborative effort, with the lyricist and composers playing essential roles in its success.
Reflecting on the broader dynamics of song production, Lalit Pandit emphasized that composers are the true creators of music, deciding on the singers and shaping the overall sound. He pointed out that while "Tujhe Dekha To" was one of Kumar Sanu's career highlights, the singer's failure to recognize the contributions of Anand Bakshi and Jatin-Lalit was disappointing.
Talking to Bollywood Hungama, Lalit Pandit also disclosed that following the production of "Tujhe Dekha To," Kumar Sanu never worked with Yash Raj Films again, hinting at some unpleasant incidents during the song's creation. This marked DDLJ as the last film under the Yash Raj banner to feature Sanu's voice. Despite the professional tensions, Lalit Pandit maintained a generally positive relationship with Kumar Sanu, noting that conflicts during the creative process were common but should not overshadow the collaborative nature of their work.
The composer duo Jatin-Lalit were behind some of the most celebrated Hindi film soundtracks of the 1990s, including albums for movies like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham', and 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander'. However, the brothers parted ways in 2006, with Fanaa being their last collaborative project. Lalit Pandit continues to compose music, recently working on Panchayat 3 and collaborating with singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya.
