Jasleen Royal : Good content suffers when artistes or labels buy views
The Hindi film music industry has been rife with controversies, the latest revolving around singers and music companies buying views to pump up the marketing strategy of a track.
Composer-singer Jasleen Royal is quite clear about her stand on this issue - she feels it's a disservice to an artiste as he/she does not get to fathom whether their song has reached the audience or not, as the views are bought.

In an interview with Bombay Times, Jasleen, who has sung several popular songs to her credit , which include singles and film songs like 'Jahan Tu Chala' ('Gully Boy'), 'Love You Zindagi' ('Dear Zindagi') 'Deh Shiva' (Kesari) among others, talks about this hard-to-ignore aspect of the music industry.
The composer-singer believes that just because a section of people can afford to buy views for their songs, great content gets left behind. “This trend of pumping views of a video is more about the number of views, rather than good or bad content. This affects good content," she states.
Jasleen did not pay attention to the views a song received earlier, but that changed over the years, having worked with so many artistes, including music labels. She explains, “When I started my journey here, I was not concentrating on kitna view hua, kitna nahi hua, I just put my song out and moved on to the next one. But having experienced it at close quarters, one begins to obsess over things like – Kitna hua? Gaana chala ke nahi? Views aa rahein hain? Kyon nahi aa rahein hai, etc. When labels announce the number of views a song has got in one day they market it and it's insane how listeners buy that perception. It is just another way of marketing a song.”
Jasleen explains why she is not a fan of this kind of marketing. “Most of the views are just numbers; they are not the actual number of people listening to the song. As an artiste, it's up to you to decide whether you want real people listening to your song. Or do you just want a good number?”
She adds, “In the long run, it means that those people have not heard your song. Jo gaane dheere dheere aage badh jaatein hain, actually reaching a million in a certain period of time. have stood the test of time. I am a fan of the latter. Dheere dheere logon tak pahucho and unke zehen mein raho, rather than have one blast and then vanish.”
