I wanted Yo Yo Honey Singh to sing 'Subah Hone Na De': Mika
‘Offensive’ doesn’t apply to girlfriends, and a** is offensive but tooh is pyaar se – here are some gems from Mika
What singer Mika says in interviews can often be as entertaining as the songs he sings, even if it’s a little hard to swallow. Recently, when he was at an event in Delhi, we told him that many people say that songs with lyrics like ‘tera peecha karoon toh rokne ka nahi’and‘tooh’celebrate stalking and eve-teasing, and make the objectification of the female body seem cool.
Asmita Das, a DU student, says, for instance, “Mika is a pop star – of course, people emulate him. Like many Bollywood songs, Mika’s songs tend to show that it is okay to stalk women because that, apparently, is just what women want. Maybe he is not writing the songs, but he does have to take responsibility for them as the one singing it.”
But when this was quoted to him, this is what the singer had to say – “Na toh maine gaane likhe hain, na mera aisa koi iraada hai. Mujhe toh music directorissliye lete hain ki main gaana hit karwa deta hoon. Mujhe Pritam bhi, baaki sab bhi, issiliye lete hain ki yeh gaega toh gaanahit hai– gun mere kandhe par rakh dete hain. Logon ko lagta hai har baarfluke hai, main toh kehta hoon ji fluke hi hai, par chal raha hai.”
When reminded of the question, Mika made an interesting, if not very convincing, distinction, saying, “Mujhe toh lagta hai ki a** aur booty kehna zyada offensive hai, disrespectful hai. Yeh shabd galat sound karte hain. Par tooh toh Punjabiyon mein pyaar se bol dete hain. Bahut logon ko toh matlab bhi nahi pata. Issmein mujhe toh kuch offensive nahi lagta. Aur rahi baat Agal Bagal ki (the song from Phata Poster Nikla Hero), toh picture mein Shahid woh gaana apni GF ke liye gaa raha hai. Aur hum apni GF ko kuch bhi kaise bhi bol sakte hain. Ussmein toh kuch galat nahi hai.” If you insist, Mika –question uthega toh dobara poochh lenge!
On his equation with Yo Yo Honey Singh and the Bollywood ‘tradition’ of never appreciating a contemporary artiste, Mika Singh said, “Zyada tar stars jinki monopoly hai, unse poochho unka favourite singer kaun hai, toh abhi ki baat koi nahi karta. Sab Kishore Kumar aur puraane singers pe pahunch jaate hain, par jo naye stars aa rahe hain, unki tareef koi nahi karta. Main iss sab se alag hoon. Main newcomers, jo mujhe talented lagte hain, unkopromote karna chahta hoon. Honey, Arijit, Benny Dayal – yeh sab newcomers bahut achha kaam kar rahe hain. Arijit toh bahut hi kamal hai. Main kehta hoon Sonu, Shaan, Honey hain – inke baad bas Arijit hi hai. Abhi ussne Barfi! mein bhi ghazal gayi hai, mushkil thi, par ussne bahut kamal gayi hai. Yo Yo ne ekdum youth ko pakda hai. Teen gaane usske maine hi promote kiye hain.Woh shuru se mera follower, fan, bhai raha hai.
When asked if he thinks he can rap better than Honey Singh, Mika said, “Main asal mein rapper hi aaya tha. Maine Ganpath mein kiya hai. Haan, main bilkulrap kar sakta hoon – karta hoon. Subah Hone Na De mein bhi mainerap kiya hai. Par Subah Hone Na De main chahta tha kiHoney gaaye. Uss samay mujhe bass lagi hui thi ki usskopromote karna hai.”
