What's your first memory of listening to RD Burman's songs?RD Burman is one of the stalwarts of the Indian
music
industry. There is something about Bengali composers that is ingrained in our music. It has something to do with the place or the musical background. My first memory of listening to his music was ‘1942: A Love Story’. I was a kid when the music of the movie came out and that was my first introduction to RD Burman’s songs. He wasn’t alive to see the film release but the album will always remain close to my heart.
What made him stand apart from the others?The most fascinating thing about RD Burman was his versatility, when it came to composing music. The song ‘Pyaar Hume Kis Mod Pe Le Aaya’ still resonates. It is one of the most difficult songs to compose and yet he did it with so much ease and flair. He is an icon that we all look up to!
What do you admire the most about the late composer?His ability to introduce voices in different forms was very interesting. The singers of today have a lot to thank him for because he gave us a wide range of vocals to work with.
Which of his songs are close to your heart and why?One song that is very close to my heart is ‘Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi Shikwa Toh Nahi’. It describes the love-hate relationship that most lovers share--you can not live with them, nor without them!
