After delivering the highest selling album of the year with Kanthaswamy, composer Devi Sri Prasad is finally glad that he has entered the big league in Kollywood. I had already tasted some success through films like Santosh Subramaniam and Villu. But Kanthaswamys success has taken me to a higher plane. The fact that both the songs and background score have been noticed has made it special, says the composer.
But what about the complaints that some songs were unwarranted in the film? We planned each song to suit the film stylistically. But yes, there were a few who had misgivings about the length of the film. However, it is not in the music directors hands to take a call on the length of the film. Once the length came under the scanner, every element in the film, including the songs seemed to be a drag. But then, the picturisation was amazing and Ekambaram has done a wonderful job, he justifies.
Next in line is the Dhanush-starrer Kutty, a remake of the Telugu hit Arya. Kutty is going to be different from Kanthaswamy, says Devi, Itll be an out-and-out youth film. We have retained just two songs Feel my love... and Edho Priyaraagam... from the original, as they were integral to the plot. Even the chartbuster Aa Ante Amalapuram... has been dropped as both the director and Dhanush felt that the Telugu version was too popular and some people might construe the Tamil one as a lift, he reveals.
Many of Devis Telugu hits have been reused in Tamil. How does he adapt his songs to another language? Music has no language. It is related not to the language but to the soul of the listener. Thats why we love Michael Jacksons songs and even Arabic songs. However, what we should do is ensure that the lyrics are not forced to fit the tune, says Devi.
Another project that Devi is looking forward to is Suriyas Singam. Musically, this film has more scope than Aaru, my previous project with director Hari. The introduction song has come out well and even Suriya was happy with it. With Suriya and Anushka coming together for the first time, youll find more romantic songs. Generally, Haris films have folk music, but he has asked to me compose the music in my own style. So, Singam will be very trendy, he promises.
So, what about the rumours that he is going to act? Devi agrees that there have been many offers in the last few years. Even now, Ive got two offers, he says, Now, there is tremendous pressure to make me act. If something interesting turns up, Ill take it because I do things that excite me.
At the same time, he is also aware that hell come under extra scrutiny if he starts acting. My first job is that of a composer. If I falter in this by concentrating on acting, then people will start criticising, he says.
Devi isnt new to facing the camera. We had actually shot a song on me for the Telugu film Jalsa. It was to be played at the end, but unfortunately, it couldnt be edited in time for the films release, he signs off.
