Bappi Lahiri's song for the famine victims
Music can be a great healer. And no one knows this better than Bappi Lahiri, who’s come up with a song for the famine victims of Somalia, where more than 29,000 children under the age of five are reported to have been killed. The song, “Land of Somalia rise up. Rise again, we are one”, has been recorded at the Rusk Sound Studios in Hollywood and features MC Hammer and Kenya Lucas apart from Bappi himself.
Says the composer, “I was moved by a video that I saw.
1x1 polls
Out of a population of roughly 7.5 million, the UN has said that 3.2 million Somalis are in need of immediate lifesaving assistance. When I had a word with my friend MC Hammer, who traces his roots to Africa, he asked me to compose a song on Somalia. Jessica Williams too expressed the same desire. The song that I have composed and produced is written by Diana Williamson and is on the same lines as Michael Jackson’s “We are the world”.”
Bappi is also keen on organizing a charity show in Memphis in end-November. The proceeds will go to the famine victims in Somalia. “I saw tears welling up in the eyes of the music enthusiasts in San Franciso when I made them hear the song. The feedback has been great so far,” he signs off.
