‘Apne mehanat nahi kari’: Shreya Ghoshal calls out the 'lazy act' of lip syncing by singers at concerts

Playback singer Shreya Ghoshal has voiced her strong opinion on the practice of lip-syncing during live concerts. Audiences often criticize performers for relying on pre-recorded tracks instead of singing live, and the singer believes this approach undermines the spirit of a live performance. Speaking about the issue, Shreya described lip-syncing as a sign that the performer has not put in the required effort. Known for delivering live vocals with remarkable consistency, she emphasised that audiences deserve genuine performances when they attend concerts.

During a podcast conversation with Raj Shamani, Shreya openly addressed the subject and shared her perspective on the growing trend. She said, “That’s just a lazy act. Apne mehanat nahi kari (You haven’t put in the hard work). In my personal opinion, it’s not a good approach.” The singer further explained that some performers adopt another method where they perform however they wish without maintaining a certain level of consistency or discipline.

Journey from ‘Devdas’ to becoming one of India’s leading voices

Shreya Ghoshal began her playback singing journey at age 16 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Devdas’. Her song ‘Bairi Piya’ from the film won her the National Award for Best Female Playback Singer, marking an extraordinary start to her career.
